Brazil

Our Brazil supply shed encompasses the Parecis region (Mato Grosso), the states of Minas Gerais, Paraná, São Paulo, and Espirito Santo and Bahia.

Unique regional context

In Brazil, farmers have two growing seasons each year. Popcorn is grown in the dry season when drought presents a risk, and other crops we source like potatoes and cassava require soil disturbance which presents soil health challenges. Practices like no-till, crop rotation, and intercropping are helping to improve productivity and resilience.

Progress

We have invested in supply shed projects in this region since 2021. In 2024, we engaged over 60,000 acres in programming to advance regenerative agriculture.

How we’re supporting regenerative agriculture in this region

General Mills began a partnership with the NGO IMAFLORA in 2019. Through this partnership and with the help of leading farmers, we developed a curriculum to highlight best practices for each crop and each producing region. Training and visits to model farms demonstrating the importance of soil health for greater productivity and resilience of production are carried out for General Mills suppliers of potatoes, corn, peanuts, spices, cassava and popcorn. At the same time, IMAFLORA conducts technical visits to understand the challenges and identify opportunities that allow for progress in regenerative systems in each agricultural context. Further, we also partner with IMAFLORA on greenhouse gas research, deforestation analyses, and soil sampling.
